A number of plastic materials are examined with respect to their applicability as core materials in damped sandwich plates having increased fatigue life over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. The influence of the reinforcement of the core materials by means of tissues of glass-fiber and of asbestos is investigated. An attempt is made to construct a sandwich core as a combination of several compounds with different good damping qualities i.e., temperature resistivity, temperature range of high loss factor, peak loss factor and frequency range of high loss factor. A strip-wise arrangement of the core is shown to lead to better damping properties than the same materials used in a laminated arrangement. Author
