Abstract:

Two multitube potassium boilers were designed, built, and tested in a 400 thermal kilowatt heat transfer loop. The first boiler was a 19-tube 14-inch inside diameter, tube and shell boiler with sodium as the heating fluid in the shell and potassium in the tubes. The second was similar, with 12-tubes of 38-inch inside diameter inside the same shell. The nominal design points for the two boilers were common. Both units were a 10 percent power module of a boiler designed for a 300-kw sub e space power system. Performance of both boilers included exit conditions of 40 percent quality to 150 F superheat and both parallel flow and counter flow operation. Author
