The seismic surface wave and P-wave data generated by the Bilby explosion and the associated cavity collapse are studied comparatively to determine the radiation patterns of these waves. The asymmetric radiation patterns of P and Rayleigh waves as well as the presence of Love waves are explained in terms of a composite source. This consists of an isotropic dilatational component due to the explosion and a double-couple component due to tectonic effects. The relative strength of the multipolar component is 0.47 times that of the explosion. The source time functions of Rayleigh and Love waves from the Bilby are determined.
