Abstract:

Charge exchange cross sections for fast heavy ions with atmospheric atoms have been calculated using a quantal two-state one-electron method. The principal ions considered have been singly charged Al, Fe, and U target atoms have been N, O, and Ar. Test results are also presented for protons and alpha particles in atomic hydrogen. The electron capture cross sections computed with ls wavefunctions are compared with experimental data and with the semi-classical Bates-Mapleton theory. The quantal results have predictive value superior to the semi-classical theory agreement with experiment is excellent, considering uncertainties in the observed cross sections. Attempts to simplify the two-state method by modelling are described and results presented. The method of calculation and details of the computer codes are elaborated in the appendices. Author
