The application of the Runge-Kutta solution method to the calculation of harmonic currents in beam-plasma systems is discussed. A method for solving and mapping the dispersion equation for a finite beam-plasma system is also outlined. Experimental results on the plasma tester are presented including density measurements and d-c characteristics. The elliptic cavity couplers are evaluated with and without an axial magnetic field on the system. The lowest transmission loss was 23.5 db for the plasma column and two elliptic cavity couplers. Nonuniform beam-plasma systems are considered further and a detailed discussion of the approximations involved in the coupled-mode method of analysis is presented. A general solution method is outlined which will be used to check the regime of validity of the coupled-mode approximations. Author
