Abstract:

The application of spin echo techniques to the detection of radar signals is considered. Of principle concern is a new technique which has been called PRESET PREset Spin Echo Technique. This new technique offers the following advantages 1 High compression ratios 2 Waveform flexibility 3 Microwave operation. Both theory and experiment are covered. Theoretical work is concerned with model development of the dynamics of the spin system and with materials for spin echo application. Experimental results for pulse compression of a linear FM chirp waveform and of a pseudo-quadratic sinusoidal FM waveform are presented. Conclusions reached can be summed up in the statement that the technique offers a new approach and solutions to some problems in wideband pulse compression which are difficult to deal with by conventional techniques. One of the principle disadvantages is the present requirement for operation of the device at liquid helium temperatures. Materials investigations, however, have shown promise that with further research this requirement could be relaxed. Author
