Results obtained during the first half of a program to develop a 1.06-micrometer optical detector are discussed. The detector will contain a germanium avalanche photodiode, thermoelectric cooler, biasing circuit, and preamplifier. Work during this half was concentrated on fabrication of both NP and PN photodiodes with a graded guardring to prevent edge breakdown. Diffusion masking problems prevented successful fabrication of the PN structure however, good NP diodes were fabricated. Diodes with avalanche gains greater than 100 were obtained. Yields were greater than 25. The design of the photodiode-cooler subassembly is discussed. This package will allow the diode to be cooled below 0 C to reduce the bulk leakage current. Author
