Abstract:

The objective of this program is to conduct the analytical and experimental studies necessary to permit the design and fabrication of thermoelectric air conditioners with improved performance for military use. This improved performance will be evaluated in terms of a combination of power consumption, size and weight, reliability and maintainability, noise and cost. To implement this plan, the areas of investigation in the performance of Phases I and II were divided into three main categories Materials research -- This category covered the selection and testing of the basic thermoelectric material, Bi2Te3-Sb2Te3-Sb2Se3, the most promising material known. Component research, development, and evaluation -- This category covered the design, development, or selection of the thermoelectric circuit, heat exchangers, air movers, power supply and control. Integration of these components into an air conditioner and the analysis of the effects of each on performance and practical design. A new fabrication technique called integral circuit construction was developed in this program. This technique can be used to fabricate a thermoelectric circuit which has a large 1A ratio and yet is relatively inexpensive to create. Having a large 1A allows the air conditioner to operate from a cheaper, simpler, lighter power supply and makes more effective use of the surface area of the heat exchanger. Studies were made to select the best heat exchanger surface and fans available, with considerable analysis being done to determine the trade-offs among power consumption, size, weight and noise. The results of the study are shown in the design of a 20,000 Btuhour thermoelectric air conditioner, which consumes 12.0 kilowatts.
