A test apparatus was successfully designed and constructed to produce accelerated impact erosion damage on selected materials. Tests were conducted in water to determine the relative resistance to erosion of seven candidate refractory turbine materials and to evaluate the effects of material hardness and impact speed on erosion resistance. Results indicate that the molybdenum-base alloys are far superior in their resistance than are columbium-base or tantalum-base alloys. Damage by erosion increased very rapidly to a certain point as a function of speed beyond this point, damage increased slowly. A reasonable correlation between hardness and resistance to erosion could not be made in the tests conducted.
