Abstract:
This report covers the fabrication, setup, and operation of the first two of a series of eight potassium thermal convection loops being used to investigate the feasibility of preventing or minimizing corrosion in bimetallic alkali metal systems by internal coating. Both 316 stainless steel and Inconel X 750 loops are included in the test series. Certain loops contain Cb-1Zr inserts andor are internally coated with Cb-1Zr by vapor deposition. The two loops operated to date were 316 stainless steel and Inconel X 750 monometallic control loops. These loops were scheduled to run for 3000 hours, however, premature failure of both loops was experienced. Although no usable data was acquired, investigators learned what conditions and design features caused failure and were able to determine the subsystem modifications that would be necessary before initiating future tests.
