Radiation attenuation in the near turbulent wake for cone vehicles in the presence of an external radiation source is considered. The wake is characterized employing a two-dimensional flow model accounting for the upstream developed boundary layer and mass addition from the base. Radiation from a spherical external source to any position on the base is evaluated considering non-grey absorption in an isothermal constant pressure wake containing the equilibrium species composition associated with sublimation of the base ablator. A computer program, BASE-RADS, for evaluating the coupled wake flow field, attenuated base radiation, and ablator response is described.
