The purpose of this program is the study and evaluation of the tetrahedron beam geometry for application in microwave tubes. The elements to generate and maintain a tetrahedron beam are the electron gun and the quadrupole lenses. Experiments on two round beam guns in combination with magnetic quadrupoles showed the following 1 electron and ion trapping in the field inhomogeneity of the quadrupole creates a plasma, distorting the optical property of the lens. The plasma was prevented with a small electric field in the lens area, 2 the first electron gun with an area convergence of fifty to one had not sufficient directional beam homogeneity to give a perfect line focus behind the quadrupole lens. The second gun with an area convergence of seventeen to one produced a good line focus. The quadrupole lens is an excellent tool for checking the directional homogeneity of round beams. Non-conforming electrons show as ghosts around the line focus. An electric line focus gun with round cathode, focusing only in one dimension, was designed and tested. Other line focus guns and magnetic quadrupoles used in earlier work are shown and compared.
