Work on the space-charge feedback model of the potential minimum was discontinued for the present reporting period. The study of the interaction of waves in a solid-state plasma with a flow of charge carriers under conditions of crossed dc fields has been extended to consider mode types having a longitudinal component of electric field. Initial planning is under way for experimental investigation of theoretically predicted waves. A Coupled-mode analysis of the interaction between an acoustic wave and a crossed-field charge flow in a semi-infinite piezoelectric semiconductor has been completed. The results indicate that it will be difficult, but not impossible, to find a material and operating conditions in which the flow is in the usual crossed-field pattern. Assuming a suitable material, we can show that the gain compares favorably with that of the acoustic-wave amplifier which does not have a crossed magnetic field.
