The very fast thermal decomposition kinetics of solid fluorine oxidizers are being studied with the objective of correlating such kinetic data with sensitivity and molecular structure. The time and temperature regimes of a detonation process are being simulated isothermally by heating platinum ribbon, upon which the sample is thinly coated, with a capacitor discharge. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer permits analysis of gaseous decomposition products to be made every 50 microseconds. The present report summarizes the technical progress made during the first year of the program in developing the technique and it presents initial test data obtained for the pyrolysis of Info-635P. Thermal analysis computations have demonstrated that a simple ribbon filament provides constant and uniform temperatures during the pyrolysis 10 microseconds to 5 milliseconds. Info-635P pyrolysis data suggest that the thermal decomposition mechanism may be quite different at low and very high heating rates. Author
