Abstract:

The susceptibility of Ti-6al-4V and Ti-4Al-8Mo-1V to environmental crack growth in 3.5-percent aqueous NaC1 solution was investigated under various conditions simulating SST service. A preliminary heat-treatment study was conducted to evaluate the strength-fracture relationships using fatigue-cracked notched bend specimens. Optimum heat-treatment conditions were selected after considering strength, fracture toughness, and crack growth under sustained load in a 3.5-percent aqueous NaCl solution. The effect of metallurgical stability on mechanical properties after 2,500 hours and the effect of variations in hydrogen and oxygen levels, heat chemistries, rolling temperatures, and test environments were determined using the same testing procedures as in the heat-treatment study.
