The author discusses all types of current sources from Voltas pile to the fuel cell of the space age. He briefly touches upon the historical development of the battery. Batteries are grouped into primary and secondary, the former being based on irreversible reactions and the latter on reversible reactions. The composition of various types of batteries is given with the aid of photographs and diagrams. Different applications are cited for the battery, e.g., the storage battery in the use of power for the automobile. Shown on page 40 is what a house of the future, having its own power plant, may look like. Fuel cells are discussed beginning on page 47 with a picture of an American Gemini space capsule. The advantages and operation of the fuel cell are examined. In the final sections of the article the following current sources are discussed with pictures and diagrams thermogenerators, solar cells, thermionic generators, MHD-generators, atomic batteries, and biological batteries.
- Electric Power Production and Distribution
- Electrochemical Energy Storage
