Abstract:

A vacuumatic furnace technique for diffusion bonding of titanium alloy honeycomb sandwich panels with 8Al-1Mo-1V faces and commercially pure core is presented. Elevated temperature distortion in matched dies caused deformation in the finished panels. A dead weight loading method as a substitute improved the deformation but did not result in as good a bond. Various coupon tests were conducted on specimens from small flat panels and from a dead weight fabricated large curved panel. The tests in which bonding was pertinent, flatwise tension, peel and flexure, showed the flat specimens superior. Compression and shear tests at room temperature and at 800 F of 36 by 36 inch curved flat wedge shaped cross-section panels were conducted. Failures were due to local instability. Steady state and transient thermodynamic tests were conducted. Good correlation was obtained in the computer predicted results and actual tests. A set of curves for predicting transient results in titanium sandwich panels is presented. Author
