THE AFFERENT INITIATION OF SHIVERING,

An investigation is reported on the nature of the physiological stimulus for shivering in the cold. Under the conditions of the present experiments, there was no apparent relation of the onset of shivering to skin, deep body andor brain temperatures. The data revealed a positive correlation between the presence of shivering and the magnitude of cold radiation internally through the circulation. It is proposed that shivering is induced reflexly through the adequate spatial and temporal summation of as yet undescribed thermodetectors dispersed in or near the vascular tree when an adequate area of the truncal circulation is sufficiently cooled.
