Abstract:

An investigation was made to study the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates in cultures of Escherichia coli under various environmental condition. Cells of Escherichia coli, B and Br, produce pentoses and hexoses when grown on a mineral medium containing acetate as the only source of carbon. The intracellular and extracellular distribution of these carbohydrates vary with the organism considered and with the growth phase of the culture. Cells of Escherichia coli Br in their logarithmic growth phase produce approximately twice the amount of intracellular hexose as the parent strain, Escherichia coli B. Following the McQuillen and Roberts 15 fractionation procedure, almost 90 of the total intracellular carbohydrate content was accounted for in the cold and hot trichloracetic acid soluble fractions. Following x-irradiation of E. coli Br, considerable amounts of intracellular pentoses and hexoses are released into the growth medium. Author
