Tests have been made of the adequacy of the photocell-microammeter method for the determination of blood pressure in the leg of the unanesthetized rat. A ring type sphygmomanometer cuff is described which has been substituted for the wrap-around cuff in the photocell-microammeter method of Kersten et al for determination of blood pressure in the leg of the unanesthetized rat. This enhances considerably the ease and rapidity of the determination of the blood pressure. By its use, 77 per cent of the indirect pressure values are within or - 10 mm. Hg, and 88 per cent are within or - 15 mm. Hg of the directly recorded carotid systolic pressures in the anesthetized rat. In the locally anesthetized rat, 70 and 89 per cent of the indirect values are within or - 10 and or -15 mm. Hg, respectively, of the direct carotid systolic pressures. This degree of accuracy is regarded as adequate for indicating a hypertensive state and is somewhat better than that obtained in the same experiments with the use of the wrap-around cuff.
