Abstract:

The only rare gas fluorides prepared to date have been radon fluoride, XeF6, XeF4, XeF2, KrF4 and KrF2. Theoretical calculations show that neon and helium fluorides will not exist while argon fluoride will be a borderline case and may form only at low temperatures. Attempts have been made to prepare argon fluoride by four methods. The spark discharge in liquid solution and UV irradiation methods seem promising. The isotopic technique using argon-37 was employed. Data indicates two argon compounds may be forming. Experimental data and reasons why the argon compound formed could not be the hydrate are presented. KrF2 was prepared by exposing gaseous mixtures of Kr and F2 to daylight at room temperature in a Pyrex bulb. Author
