Abstract:

The results are presented of an experimental investigation on a series of 7 screw propellers, operating in an artificially disturbed inflow. The effect of teh blade area ratio, the advance ratio, the skew and the number of blades on the vibratory propeller forces is studied. A comparison with tendencies obtained from a simple two-dimensional theory is made. It can be concluded that the propeller geometry, particularly the blade area ratio above 0.4 is an important parameter that cannot be treated with a two dimensional theory. Effects of other conditions, as the advance ratio and skew, follow the general trend obtained from two dimensional considerations. Finally the superposition principle effect of the bladed gap can be applied for rough approximations. It is suggested to compare the results with a more advanced theory, in order to obtain a better insight in the hydrodynamic mechanism of the propeller. Author
