Abstract:

During this portion of the program work was continued in the field of developing a solid-state charge control system for protection of nickel-cadmium cells using the stabistor diode as the primary control. A circuit was designed and breadboarded that operated at 25 C and at a charging current of 18 amperes. By the use of a thermistor bridge network, the circuit was able to control the charging current to a load and reduce the charging current to a trickle charge upon the appropriate electrical signal. Work began on the fabrication of stabistor diodes that can be used in the protection of silver-cadmium and silver-zinc cells at high charge rates. Units were produced with voltage characteristics approaching those required for silver-zinc cells. However, additional work is required before the design can be fixed.
