Abstract:

During the third quarter of this program, screening studies were completed on methods for field testing of the propellants N2H4UDMH, N2O4NO and gelled N2H4Al. Items covered to complete Phase I were 1 the determination of NO in N2O4 at the 0.6 percent level by means of partial pressure measurements, 2 the comparison of the gravimetric oxygen bomb method vs the partial pressure method for N2O4NO 9010 propellant, and 3 the determination of N2H4 in N2H4Al gel by controlled current coulometry. As a result of the screening studies carried out in Phase I, the following methods were selected for development into model field test kits 1 the partial pressure technique to determine NO in N2O4NO propellant, 2 the coulometric method for the characterization of N2H4UDMH propellant and determination of N2H4 in N2H4Al gelled propellant, and 3 the calcium hydride-water reaction pressure measurement for the determination of water in N2H4UDMH and N2H4Al gelled propellant.
