The objective of this program is to compress a perveance 0.54 x10 to the minus 6th power AV to the 32 power electron beam by a factor of 1000 and to gain understanding of the behavior of the electron beam. The experimental portion of the program is conducted in a flexible demountable beam tester the theoretical study consists of developing techniques for obtaining a self-consistent solution for dense thermal electron beams by the use of the distribution function and extension of paraxial theory. To date, nonparaxial terms such as variation in emission across the cathode, variation in axial velocity with radius and distortion, and curvature of the cathode have been considered. Comparison of theory with experiment indicates that the structure results primarily from the curvature of the cathode. Good qualitative agreement exists between the observed current density distribution and that computed both in the presence and in absence of the magnetic field. Modifications to the apparatus are nearing completion, and compression experiments will begin soon. Author
