A series of high temperature oils has been evaluated in a high temperature thin film oxidation unit. The apparatus measures oxygen consumption and deposits by the oils in thin films on a rotating heated disc. The test exhibited excellent correlation with deposit formation in a jet engine. To simplify the selection of conditions for future testing requirements, the effects of several test variables have been evaluated. These include disc temperature, oil circulation rate, disc velocity, preheating the oil prior to contact with the disc, oxidation of the sump oil, the effects of metals, and test duration. Author
