Mechanical and physical properties are measured on SiC and other high modulus, low density continuous filaments such as B4C, TiB2. SiC filaments exhibited a high tensile-strength-to-density ratio, retention of strength to 1000 C, and chemical stability in metal matrices and thus a high potential for application in high temperature composites. Techniques for fabrication of SiC-Ni and SiC-Al composites have been developed and some properties of these composites are measured. If the effects of porosity are accounted for, these composites would yield tensile properties in agreement with those predicted by the law of mixture.
