The purpose of this report is to make recommendations which will result in the attainment of X-7A-1 and X-7A-3 vehicles capable of flight testing ramjet engines with HEF-2 and HEF-3. The report is organized as follows Part I of this report, based on a search of the literature, reviews the chemical and physical properties of HEF-2 and HEF-3 with special emphasis on those characteristics which result in flight test problems different from those experienced with the conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Part II details the vehicle development problems suggesting the various possibilities for their solution. Part III, Conclusions and Recomendations, is broken down into four sections to correspond to the four possible flight configurations suggested by the Air Force, i.e., X-7A-1 vehicle using HEF-2, X-7A-1 vehicle using HEF-3, X-7A-3 vehicle using HEF-2, and X-7A-3 vehicle using HEF-3. Specific conclusions are reached regarding certain design and procedure changes considered to be necessary on the basis of this study. It appears, in general, that the problems connected with the use of HEF-2 are similar to problems involved in the use of HEF-3. Although each fuel has one or more problems which are unique or more difficult to solve because of certain characteristic differences, flight test experience with HEF-2 would be invaluable as a source of information applicable to later flights with HEF-3.
