Abstract:

The present work was undertaken to determine the probability of detection of brief light flashes at two levels of luminance and at two flash rates. With a flash duration of 180 milliseconds and a luminance of 0.13 km c, it was found that the probability of detection, which was in the order of 0.25, was essentially identical irrespective of the flash rate. When the luminance level was increased to 0.935 km c, the probability of detection was increased to near certainty. It was also determined that those who detected flashes, generally detected them by the fourth or fifth flash. Author
