Abstract:

The computer results for the two-stream instability in the 111 direction of n-type germanium for 77 K operation with an applied electric field of 1000 vcm have been obtained. The instability frequency at the maximum growth rate is 27 GHz. However, the growth rate at 77 K is insufficient to overcome collisional damping. Experiments with bismuth using an InSb Putley submillimeter wave detector have resulted in observation of some low-level intermittent radiation in one sample later found to contain a minute transverse crack but has not been observed in two other samples tested. Further increases in drift velocity without sample destruction are required. This will be accomplished by increasing relaxation time by operating below 4.2 K and by decreasing sample strains with improved preparations and mounting techniques.
