This interim report discusses the investigation of the feasibility of an air-vacuum interface which permits direct electron beam scanning of a five-inch coated photographic film moving through the interface at approximately two ips. The technical problems posed by such a device are reviewed and possible solutions examined. A patent and literature survey of current progress in vacuum and electron beam technology is presented. The feasibility of developing an air-vacuum interface is studied in detail and conductance and air flow computations reviewed. The construction and performance of four experimental vacuum sealing schemes are presented and critically analyzed. Recommendations for further study are submitted. Author
