The far-infrared lattice absorption studies of CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, and CDF2 have been completed. The temperature dependence of the transverse optic vibration frequencies for the above lattices has been deduced and related to the temperature-dependent microwave dielectric constant. A quantum mechanical derivation of the optical properties in the harmonic approximation is given. The most reasonable procedure for the phenomenological treatment of damping effects is described. The physical origin of damping effects is discussed and it is shown how the perturbation theoretical results may be simplified in the low-frequency limit. Damping functions for the above materials are given as a function of frequency and temperature. Author
