Equations are derived to describe the elastic behavior of two concentric cylinders separated by longitudinal stiffeners and subject to external pressure. The theory is further extended to include the application of internal pressure to the structure. The results of hydrostatic pressure tests conducted on three test vessels, designed in accordance with the derived procedures show that the theory is capable of predicting the actual failure pressure to an accuracy of better than 10 per cent. It was further determined that the longitudinally stiffened pressure vessel weighs approximately 50 per cent more than the equivalent circumferentially stiffened one. Author
