Abstract:

The Sound-Measuring Set is a stable, reliable, battery- or AC-powered, small portable field instrument designed for underwater acoustic measurements at frequencies from 50 to 100,000 Hz. Ease of operation with minimum chance for error was a major design requirement. A special high-impedance, low-noise preamplifier is used with hydrophones to limit self-noise to a level equivalent to approximately that of sea state zero. The hydrophone-preamplifier assembly is designed to operate to depths exceeding 1,000 feet. The system includes an internal means for quick calibration at frequencies from 0.1 to 70 kHz, at levels from -30 to -90 dBV. Flexibility is provided by two gain paths with independent attenuators and filters that may be connected to a single hydrophone or used individually with two hydrophones. Transistors are used throughout in the circuitry. Author
