Contemporary cognitive psychology has emphasized the importance of mediational representations and subjective states. This paper stressed the realization that perception concerns the nature of an internal subjective representation, whose properties the organism attributes to an external object. An important aspect of the study of perceptual set involves the factors which bring about this subjective state, independently of the more psychophysical considerations about the representations accuracy. Such factors are undoubtedly of critical importance for the further encoding, storage and utilization of perceptual information.
