Abstract:

This book introduces singular perturbation techniques by showing the reader how to obtain asymptotic solutions to several important classes of problems. It concentrates principally on boundary value problems for linear and nonlinear differential equations and includes a detailed treatment of specific examples arising in chemical kinetics and optimal control. Discussion is motivated throughout by simple examples. Particular heuristic ideas that underlie the techniques are developed. The author makes frequent reference to the current literature for applications and generalizations of the topics discussed.
