Abstract:

Two new compositions of hard-facing alloys and one cermet were developed as corrosion- and wear-resistant materials for mechanical-face-seal applications. After showing excellent resistance to localized corrosion, in a newly developed laboratory test, the hard-facing alloys were fabricated in the form of weld rods by a casting process and in the form of powders by an atomization process. The weld rods were used with the gas tungsten-arc process to make successful weld deposits on Inconel 625 coupons. The powders were applied by a plasma weld-surfacing technique to Inconel 625. A special cermet was developed for possible use as a mechanical-face-seal wearing surface. The cermet showed excellent properties in wear tests and in laboratory and sea-water corrosion tests.
