The objective of this program is to develop a miniaturized dye laser suitable for a variety of applications, particularly in an underwater environment. The following tasks have been performed Re-evaluate alternative pumps cavity configurations Perform preliminary tests of promising new coumarin dyes Investigate the use of increased flashlamp input energy Evaluate the use of reduced arc length and of arc image defocussing to reduce pulse amplitude fluctuations Redesign the laser resonator for improved efficiency Investigate the effects of dye filtering and increased dye flow rates Demonstrate laser operation with 100 watt usable peak power output, at a pulse repetition rate of at least 200 pps, for a non-stop operating period in excess of 20 seconds. This interim report presents a summary of the results of these investigations, followed by a brief outline of plans for continuing work in the next reporting period.
