The object of this paper is to give a concise review of current methods for solving algebraic eigenvalue problems involving matrices so large that they cannot be maintained in array form in the high speed storage of a computer. Topics discussed include the following Sparse matrix technology quasi-direct methods methods that reduce the Rayleigh quotient and methods based on Krylov sequences.
