Surviving splenocytes form cyclophosphamide-treated immune donors can confer immunity to challenge with virulent P. berghei. During progress of infection of young rats with P. berghei, splenic erythropoiesis predominates over formation of immune oriented cells. Rats show enhanced response to sheep rbc during the initial stages of P. berghei infection, followed by immunosuppression which persists in early latency. Experiments with phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide suggest that the immunosuppressive effect of P.berghei infection involves B and T cells. Acid phosphatase in normal mouse macrophages has been studied as a marker of cell activation associated with engulfment of Leishmania tropica in vitro. Delayed hypersensitivity has been demonstrated in C3H mice recovering from infection with L.tropica. The excreted factor EF of leishmania has been further fractionated and characterized. It is negatively charged, resistant to boiling, carbohydrate-like. It precipitates antibody but is not antigenic. Modified author abstract
