The chemistry of the first excited, metastable, state of He, Ar, Xe, N2 and CO has been studied by the flowing afterglow technique. Concentrations of reactants and products were monitored by absorption and emission spectroscopy. The total quenching cross sections for these excited states have been rather fully characterized for a variety of reagent molecules. Product channels also have been identified for some reactions. The experimental techniques have been developed and standardized to the extent that additional measurements can be made with relative ease by other laboratories.
