Solid Cadmium Embrittlement of 4340 Steel.

High strength AISI 4340 steel heat treated to 210-220 ksi UTS was observed to suffer degraded ductility when exposed to solid cadmium. The critical criteria include effective tensile strain parallel to the Cdsteel interface and intimate Cdsteel contact oxide free. At moderate temperatures 300 deg F exposure for extended periods 100 hrs is required to produce the embrittlement effect. The most severe of the test conditions employed in this study produced evidence that intergranular slow growth cracking could occur, resulting in deteriorated load bearing capacity of the material.
