Methods for estimating plastic deflections of impulsively loaded structures are described with emphasis on methods for rate dependent behavior which can be extended to problems of finite deflections. Two approaches are described, namely deflection bounds and the mode approximation technique. A constitutive law of homogeneous viscous type is used since this simplifies both approaches and is conservative. The authors illustrate fitting this representation to test data for mild steel and titanium alloys. A discrete two-mass model is used to illustrate the basic ideas. Author
