Abstract:
Rolling contact fatigue studies were conducted comparing hot-pressed silicon nitride and consumable vacuum melted M-50 steel. Test results showed that a Silicon nitride is superior to M-50 steel by at least an order of magnitude. b Surface finishing process significantly effects the fatigue life of silicon nitride. c Silicon nitride run in contact with M-50 steel may have a detrimental effect on the fatigue life of M-50 steel. d Skidding may be detrimental to the surface durability of silicon nitride.
