Abstract:
The research program consists of two interrelated areas of work, both aimed at understanding the genetic basis of variation in scrub typhus organisms. It was felt that a combined program, studying both nucleic acid synthesis and genetics, was the most logical approach to this problem. Once the mechanism of variation was revealed, it might be possible to influence changes in the rickettsiae by chemical mutagenesis and develop strains particularly suitable for vaccine development which contain multiple major surface antigens.
