Aircraft night operations mission includes tasks employing helicopters for low level night operations. The special problem of detection and avoidance of wire obstacles at altitudes less than 100 feet has been researched. The latest laser development employs a pulsed CO2 Heterodyne system. Since laser systems employ narrow beams, the problems of field of view FOV, repetition rate, and frame up date rate are closely related and dependent upon laser systems limitation in size, weight, and maximum output power achievable. Tests showed that under special conditions a pulsed laser illuminator with a Gated Low Light Level TV could detect wires at ranges up to 6000 feet. The display of such small objects at this range was beyond the normal expectations for an LLL TV.
