A finite element procedure for the general case of transient unconfined flow is described in this paper other categories can be handled as special cases of the general case. Numerical characteristics of the proposed procedure are examined and a special scheme is developed that assures satisfaction of convergence and stability at each time level. The aspect of trade-offs in accuracy and computational effort in using approximating models of various orders for the fluid potential is also studied. The validity of the procedure is checked by comparing numerical predictions with laboratory and field observations for typical real life problems.
