Abstract:
The effect of loading rates ranging from 1,000 to 10,000,000 pounds per second on the crack growth resistance of multi-directional laminates of glass-epoxy has been determined. The results reported are the instantaneous stress intensity factors for crack extensions of 0.1 and 0.2 inches. A 60 per cent in-crease in crack growth resistance is obtained for a loading rate increase from 10,000 to 10,000,000 pounds per second. A modified 6strain compliance6 technique, based on the ratio of strain at a given point to the applied load, is used to obtain a measurement of crack extension under dynamic loading.
