The bare base concept provides a significant contribution to the U.S. policy of deterrence through application of the military strategies of flexible response and strategic mobility. The thesis includes a discussion of the bare base concept and provides a history of the chronological evolution of the equipment from World War 2 to the present. Major generations of bare base hardware are GRAY EAGLE, HARVEST EAGLE, Project 3782, and Bare Base Equipment System 437A. System 437A is of great interest since it is the latest generation of equipment to be developed. The systems composition and capability are presented along with a listing of its limitations. The future of the concept and equipment is discussed by highlighting potential short-term and long-term improvements that might be incorporated into the system. Modified author abstract
