Abstract:
Some form of benchmarks have for some time constituted the accepted form of minimum performance measurement in competitive computer system selection. Benchmarks have the advantages of constituting semi-real work mixes and running on real systems. Benchmarks also suffer from certain disadvantages. Synthetic programs have been suggested as a viable alternative to natural benchmarks. A small library of synthetic COBOL programs has been developed, and experiments are being conducted to determine its suitability as a source of benchmark programs. The synthetic programs are task-oriented and completely portable.
